9th - 12th Grade Clinician
Dr. Shannon Jeffreys is Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at the Georgia Southern University Gretsch School of Music in Statesboro, Georgia. Her focus is the Southern Chorale, teaching in the undergraduate and graduate conducting and music education curricula, along with directing Southern Gentry barbershop ensemble. Dr. Jeffreys maintains an active schedule as a presenter, adjudicator, lecturer, and guest conductor from secondary to collegiate institutions throughout the United States. She serves as an international choral adjudicator with Meeting Music and on the faculty of Harmony University with the Barbershop Harmony Society.
Choirs under Jeffreys’ direction have been featured on multiple state, national, and international conventions, most recently performing at the National Collegiate Choral Organization’s National Conference. Internationally, Southern Chorale has won prizes and received acclaim at prestigious competitions in Austria, Hungary, the United States and Germany, including the famous International Chamber Choir Competition in Marktoberdorf, Germany. In 2019, Dr. Jeffreys received the Conductor’s Award from the Ave Verum International Choral Competition in Baden, Austria.
Before coming to Georgia Southern, Jeffreys served as Director of Vocal Studies at Erskine College and Theological Seminary. She holds degrees in music performance and conducting from Birmingham Southern College, the University of Mississippi, and the University of South Carolina.
6th - 8th Grade Clinician
Heather Cantwell is currently in her 26th year of teaching choral music in the state of Alabama and her 16th year as the choral Director at Liberty Park Middle School in Vestavia Hills, Alabama where she was named the 2015–2016 Rotary Teacher of the Year and the 2022–2023, Alabama Music Educator of the Year. Originally from Hoover, Alabama, Mrs. Cantwell received a stellar music education from a very young age. She credits, Amanda Klimko and Diana Mayhall with instilling in her a deep love of choral music and singing and for encouraging her to become a music teacher. She holds a BME and an MME from the University of Montevallo where she studied with Dr. Michael Meeks and the late Dr. Robert E Wright Jr. Mrs. Cantwell has taught choral music at both the high school and middle school levels but considers teaching middle school singers her passion.
Throughout her career, Mrs. Cantwell has held leadership positions in various professional organizations. She is a member of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) and Alabama Vocal Association (AVA). She is the current Recording Secretary, Historian, and Middle School/Junior High School R&R Chairman for the Alabama Chapter of ACDA. She previously served on the Alabama ACDA Young Voices Committee, and the Alabama Vocal Association’s, Board of Directors as State Secretary, District Chair, and Co-Chair. Choirs under her direction have consistently received superior ratings at district and state, choral performance assessments and have performed all over the United States, including Atlanta, GA, New York City, NY, Orlando, FL, and Los Angeles, CA. She has served as a presenter, clinician and adjudicator throughout Alabama and has mentored numerous student interns. She lives in Trussville, Alabama, where her most important jobs are wife of 25 years to Bard and mom to their three children Conner (21), Cameron (18) and Kate (10).

We will be offering 12 - 20-minute slots for Voice Lessons 12th GRADE STUDENTS ONLY. A video of the student singing a piece they have selected must be emailed to msuchoir@msstate.edu by Friday, August 30 in order to be considered for one of the 12 slots. The Voice faculty will select one of those students to sing a solo at the Monday Concert!
NEW FOR 2024 **Choral Scholarship** – The student selected to sing a solo on Monday will also receive a one-time $500 scholarship if they attend MSU and sing in choir for Fall 2025.
The MSU Choral Scholarship is subject to all terms and conditions of MSU AOP 12.39 Policy on Undergraduate University Scholarship Programs and Procedures. Other MSU awarded scholarships may be combined with this award but may not exceed the designated Cost of Attendance.
In 2024 we will celebrate the 13th annual MSU Choral Colloquium! Previous years included world renowned conductors and educators such as Andrea Ramsey, Tom Shelton, Kenneth Fulton, Earlene Rentz, Susan Brumfield, Denise Eaton, Deanna Joseph, Randall Stroope, David Brunner, Sandra Snow, Patricia Corbin, Julie Yu, Eph Ehly, Jeffrey Murdock, Vincent Oakes, William Powell, Alissa Rowe and others.
We are now accepting choral performances from high school and middle school choirs. Contact us if you'd like to perform on our Sunday evening concert.
